IMPORTANT MEETING JUNE, 2010
TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST 7:30 P.M.
AMERICAN LEGION POST 180
www.BroadviewPark.org 1280 SW 44th TERRACE
FLORIDA STATE SENATOR ELEANOR SOBEL WILL BE THE SPEAKER
at the meeting of the Broadview Park Civic Association on Tuesday, June 1st, 7:30 PM.
Notice the change in location. Due to a fire at Sunview Park, we will be meeting at American Legion Post 180 at the corner of Davie Blvd. and SW 44th Terrace. The senator will report on the recent session of the state legislature and the new laws that will affect us. We look forward to getting acquainted with Senator Sobel.
In addition to reports from BSO, Code Enforcement, and the Neighborhood Improvement Project, we will be electing officers and board members for the coming year. We have a couple of openings on the Board of Directors and would welcome some fresh faces and new ideas. Please let us know if you would be willing to serve as a director – 954-583-0796.
Many, many thanks to the legion for sharing their space. We do not meet during the summer, so unless there is an unexpected emergency, this will be our last meeting until October.
A MESSAGE FROM AMERICAN LEGION POST 180 COMMANDER MALLARD
The American Legion Broward Memorial Post 180 welcomes the members of the Broadview Park Civic Association. Post 180 has been a part of our community for the past 50 years. The American Legion was chartered in 1919 by Congress as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization. Today the American Legion is the nation’s largest war-time organization founded on the values, contributions and sacrifices of those who answer the country’s call to arms. We are serving veterans in over 14,000 communities in our country and encourage all veterans in our local community to visit our post.
There are three classes of membership at the post: veterans; sons of veterans; and the women’s auxiliary (women related to veterans). Meetings are held the fourth Thursday of the month at 8:00 PM.
Two events that are open to the general public are our Sunday morning breakfasts served from 9 AM to Noon, just $5.00, and our Friday evening dinners served from 6 to 9 PM – a great menu at reasonable prices. For further information call the post at 954-581-9314.
STATE LEGISLATURE PASSES BILL TO THWART SEX OFFENDERS
Previous bills relating to convicted sex offenders set up buffer zones which prevented offenders from living within 1000 feet of schools, playgrounds, and other places where children gather. Many cities increased the size of their buffer zones to more than 1000 feet. Broward County recently set the buffer zones in the unincorporated areas at 2500 feet. The problem is that these zones only determined where the offenders had to be after 10 PM when most children were already safely home and in bed. There was no restriction on their whereabouts during the daylight hours.
At their recent session the state legislature passed a bill that will give better protection to our children. Sex offenders and predators are now banned from loitering or prowling within 300 feet of places where children congregate. This would include places like school bus stops in addition to schools, parks, and playgrounds and would be enforceable 24 hours a day. A violation of one of these “circles of safety” would be a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail.
ITEMS IN THE NEWS
The building at Sunview Park is no longer usable due to fire and smoke damage. Last month when a staff member arrived to open up at 7:00 AM, he found the building full of smoke. It appears that the fire started in the electrical system about 5:00 AM and burned a hole in the roof. The building is about 50 years old, so the parks department has decided to tear it down and rebuild. In the meantime they are moving a double-wide mobile unit to the property so that their summer camp program can be held on schedule starting the week of June 14th. New permanent restrooms have been built just inside the front gate.
Rumaldo Frometa, the 17 year-old who molested a 9-year-old boy at Sunview Park back in December, has been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on charges of kidnapping and impersonating a police officer. Circuit Judge Mark Speiser ordered Frometa held at the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee. If he can one day comprehend how the court system works, he will be brought back to Broward to face criminal charges and possibly years in prison.
The City of Plantation has purchased the vacant 1.1 acres on Peters Road where the Pine Ridge Trailer Park was located for many years. To control future development, the city spent $385,000 of Community Redevelopment Agency funds to acquire the land which had been scheduled to be sold at a foreclosure auction on April 8th.
Note: The latest word from the NIP indicates that the sewer project on the west side of the community is scheduled to begin in October, 2010.
ATTACK OF THE SLOBS - Friendly Landscaping does a super job maintaining our entryway gardens at 49th Avenue and Peters Road. Unfortunately we have some residents who use the gardens as a dumpster. Recently Friendly had put everything in tip-top shape, but within 48 hours I counted 3 beer bottles, 3 water bottles, and 7 aluminum cans and picked up a bag full of styrofoam cups, hamburger wrappers, and other assorted trash.
There are also a few residents who don’t seem to care that their yards are littered with trash. Don’t these people realize that they are not only lowering the value of our property, but spoiling the appearance of the whole neighborhood. Many thanks to those of you who assisted in our community clean-up on April 10th. Let’s all make the clean-up a year-round project.
DUES ARE DUE - WE NEED YOUR HELP – The civic association works to improve this entire community and maintain the value of our homes through our many projects such as our annual spring clean-up and maintenance of the entryway gardens. This has been a hard year financially for everyone, even for the association, so we hope you can support our efforts by sending $10 for your family’s membership in the civic association. If you have not already renewed your dues, please use the form below to extend your support to May 31, 2011.
WE WELCOME YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR PROJECTS THROUGH YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES.
